MODULE 5 – LIVING MOODBOARD

Lesson 6 – Application space design

The LIVING MOODBOARD tool represents a key step in transitioning from exploration to concrete design. The moodboards are not merely aesthetic collages, but true visual narratives translating emotions, desires, and inspirations into design language.

Through the selection of colours, textures, furnishings, and visual atmospheres, learners can:

  • Define a stylistic identity consistent with the experiences explored in previous modules;
  • Identify colour palettes and materials aligned with expressed needs;
  • Build a shared design mood;
  • Transform living imagination into a tangible guide for creating regenerative and personalised interiors.

Moodboards thus function as relational design maps, capable of guiding informed decisions during renovation, spatial planning, or co-design processes. They provide valuable insight for creating spaces that resonate emotionally, reflect identities, and embrace diversity.

Importantly, after this initial phase of self-reflection and personal exploration, learners are prepared to apply the tool in real environments, bridging their personal experience with practical, on-site design activities.

Once a real space has been selected for renovation, learners will be asked to create moodboards for the end users of those spaces. These boards will be informed by previous observation, interviews, user journeys, and other research, allowing learners to translate the needs, preferences, and lifestyles of the actual inhabitants into concrete design proposals.

This activity allows end users to:

  • Feel heard and represented in the design process, bridging the gap between designer and user;
  • Strengthen their sense of belonging and identification with the spaces they inhabit;
  • Engage with an intuitive visual language, even if they have difficulty verbalising their preferences
  • Preview atmospheres and stylistic combinations, enabling more informed and conscious design choices;
  • Experience a space that truly reflects their own needs, preferences, and sense of wellbeing, rather than a generic or standardised design.

LIVING MOODBOARD is an inclusive tool that values individuality and helps create welcoming, familiar, and tailored living environments.
