MODULE 6-THE LANGUAGE OF COLOUR

Lesson 2 – Tool Description

Through the LANGUAGE OF COLOUR tool, colour is explored as a living language capable of connecting perception, emotion, and memory.

Each hue carries its own vibration, capable of deeply influencing human behaviour, the quality of spatial perception, and psychophysical wellbeing. Understanding these effects means using colour as a conscious design tool – not as a simple decorative element.

During the workshop, two complementary dimensions are explored:

  • Chromatic hierarchy (dominant, subdominant, accent) enabling the creation of coherent visual harmonies that define the atmosphere of a space, balancing stability and dynamism;
  • Synesthesia, used as a creative tool to translate emotions and sensations (e.g., warm/cold, sweet/bitter, near/far) into colour choices, fostering a more empathetic and sensitive design approach, particularly in contexts where vulnerable populations live.

Through practical exercises, participants learn to read colour as an integral part of the design process. The module emphasises the importance of contrast as a key principle for giving rhythm and depth to compositions: without contrast, perception cannot exist.

Learning the different types of contrast – hue, saturation, temperature, light/shadow – provides concrete tools for designing communicative, engaging, and inclusive spaces.

Finally, colour is studied not as an isolated entity, but in relation to light, materials, people, and culture.

This systemic approach enables learners to apply the acquired skills across multiple fields: from therapeutic, educational, and domestic environments to public and collective spaces, generating measurable impacts on wellbeing and on the quality of lived experience.
